Don’t Get Involved is her third book.
A missing shipment of cocaine
Three street-kids fighting for their lives
A Mafia hitman intent on killing them
A naïve expat who gets in their way
Who would you bet on?
Ukraine, 2001. A time of lawlessness and corruption. Three street-kids stumble upon a holdall full of cocaine, belonging to the Mafia. Mafia hitman, Leonid, is given the job of retrieving the cocaine and disposing of the street-kids. To do so he is forced to step back into his old life and he doesn’t like it. The children run on their wits. Leonid hunts them down. Nadia, a young woman with her own dark past, arrives in Ukraine looking for a fresh start. She wasn’t expecting this!
“She had no idea of what, or who, she was supposed to be running from. Right now everything was a threat. Definitely militsiya, but who else? Everyone. Right now it felt like everyone.”
Don’t get Involved is set in Ukraine and we follow a a group of kids who end up involved with a mafia hitman when they find some cocaine. Straight away this book was right up my street with the gangland element woven into the story. I am not normally a fan of story’s set in another country…..I’m so British lol
So with it set in Ukraine there are characters and places that you wouldn’t normally find in a British novel is what I am getting at. But once I settled in I found this an enjoyable read. The easiest way to describe this book is The Gonnies meets the Mafia, because that’s what it felt like to me. When I say The Gonnies I mean how the relationships between the kids was sticking together though thick and thin.
It is at atmospheric read with some beautiful scenes making me feel like I am in the story. I have to admit I have never read a book like this one before. there is something really mesmerising about this story, A long with the crime the author takes us on an emotional roller coaster with scences that pulled on my heart strings.
This is the first book that I have by the author and certainly wont be last.
I would like to thank F J Curlew for a copy and for the blog tour invite.
